What is a Doula?

A trained companion who is not a healthcare professional and who supports another individual through a significant health related experience. 

 

What do I do? 

- help you write your postpartum care plan

- support you emotionally, mentally and physically during the postpartum period

-provide gentle guidance and support to your partner

- help you to communicate your preferences and wishes 

- support you in your home

- help to integrate baby into the home

- answer questions

- help you to reflect

- assist with newborn care 

- to support you in your decisions and choices 

What I do not do?

- perform clinical tasks (including but not limited to blood pressure, vaginal exams) 

- act as a nurse, midwife, or doctor

- judge your decisions 

- make decisions for you, or speak on your behalf 

- take over for your partner, I help to support the family not take over the family
